To a scientist, time is a relatively simple matter, but when one gets into the Bible time has qualitative and subjective aspects---there is much more to consider. The Bible contrasts time and eternity as well. God is outside of time. He is,
"...the high and lofty one, who inhabits eternity." (Isaiah 57:15)
Time as we know it was created by God---it is part of the creation. However the created universe consists of a physical, material world and a spiritual realm---the latter is called in the New Testament "the heavenly places." In the heavenlies time has quite different properties than we usually think about in regard to the physical, material world. Man was created to live in both worlds (the material and the spiritual) at the same "time" and a study of time and eternity (a much neglected subject) carries a number of surprises. The physical universe has been drastically affected by the fall of Lucifer and his angels, and by the fall of man. This means we now live in a damaged, deteriorating "old creation." Time itself has been altered by the fall.
We gratefully acknowledge the inspirational research, insights and contributions of Lambert T. Dolphin and also Arthur C. Custance (1910-1985) who have made this area of our web-site possible for all to study
Lambert T. Dolphin - received his AB degree with high honors in physics and distinction in mathematics from San Diego State University in June 1954. After two years of graduate study in Physics and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, (1954-1956), he joined the staff of SRI International (formerly Stanford Research Institute), in Menlo Park, California where he remained almost continuously for the next 30 years. He left my position at SRI as a Senior Research Physicist in 1987 to pursue small-scale independent geophysical consulting services and to devote the bulk of his time to Bible teaching, writing and Christian counseling.
Arthur C. Custance (1910-1985)- was born and educated in England and moved to Canada in 1928 while in his late teens. In his second year at the University of Toronto he was converted to faith in Christ. The experience so changed his thinking that he switched courses, obtaining an honours M.A. in Hebrew and Greek. His continuing biblical studies led to a keen interest in biblical archaeology and anthropology. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Ottawa in 1959 while serving as head of the Human Engineering Laboratories of the Defence Research Board in Ottawa (Canada) and was engaged in research work for 15 years. His writings are characterized by a rare combination of scholarly thoroughness and biblical orthodoxy.
